U.S. News & World Reports released its list of the best 25 jobs in 2012. The list reflects jobs that would lead to the best careers, based on current employment and projected growth rates, along with factors such as salary and job satisfaction.
The top 10 jobs all fell within the healthcare or technology field. Where did Financial Adviser fall on the list? It came in towards the bottom, making onto the list as number 23. While Financial Adviser is not the highest on the top 25, it is listed as having the highest top end salary range, coming in as $166,400.
The need for financial advisers is rapidly growing amid the millions of boomers reaching retirement. “Financial advising jobs are expected to be one of the faster-growing occupations over the next decade, with a projected growth rate of 32.1 percent between 2010 and 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.”
Financial Advisers have varying career path opportunities, from working in a large national firm or a small independent practice, or providing services of asset management or fee only planning. As an adviser, your customers are your top priority. ““Financial planning is a very client-centric business—personal attributes are very important, including the ability to listen, be responsive to client needs, and empathy. A background in customer service or sales service would be a plus,” Cathy Curtis, an independent, fee-only financial adviser based in Oakland, Calif.”
Interested in getting started in Financial Advising? “Curtis recommends first studying to become a certified financial planner, which requires specific coursework, and gaining work experience at a small- to mid-sized financial planning firm. “I wouldn’t be picky about my first job in the industry; I would use it as a way to learn about the business,” she says. Curtis also recommends joining a professional association such as the Financial Planning Association or National Association of Personal Financial Advisors.”
